We need an electric bicycles revolution.

http://www.smallplanetebikes.com/Even people who wouldn’t consider themselves environmentalists are starting to realize that humanity is having an impact on the planet’s ecosystems. It’s hard to deny the overwhelming evidence that the planet is getting warmer, that severe weather events are getting more severe, and that ecosystems are starting to fail. The coral reefs are seeing more bleaching than they’ve ever seen, something that happens when the ocean water is too warm. If the bleaching goes on for too long in a specific reef, it will die. The earth’s rainforests continue to be cut down, with more and more species going on the endangered species list or going extinct. The oceans and waterways are becoming more polluted. In fact, there are now huge patches of plastic and trash debris just floating in the ocean, with new ones being found every few years. The environment is in trouble, and humanity needs to do something about it. Not only for the planet’s sake, but for ours as well.

Fortunately, there are lots of great things happening around the world that are trying to address this problem. Companies are developing electric vehicles, countries are pledging to get more and more of their power from renewable sources, and governments are committing to protecting their forests. One of the best trends, albeit on a smaller scale, that we’re starting to see around the world is the shift to ebikes. Ebikes are electric bikes that are powered not only by someone pedaling them manually but also by a battery that charges from that pedaling. The battery takes the energy from the person pedaling and stores it, and then it can be used to power the bike when the person gets tired. A person could use the stored energy to power the bike up a hill, or they could use it to help them travel the last couple of miles of their trip when they get tired.

What the world needs, along with many environmentally-sound policies, is an electric bicycles revolution. We need to get millions and millions of people to stop driving cars and to start using electric bicycles. Taking millions of cars off of the road and replacing them with electric bicycles would have an incredibly positive impact on the issue of climate change. It would remove millions of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, and would help to give the planet a fighting chance of adjusting to the new levels of carbon in the atmosphere. If humanity continues to emit greenhouse gases like it is and doesn’t make the shift to environmentally sound transportation modes like electric bicycles, there are going to be some serious consequences.
